About Château de Camensac

The Médoc is one of the most important regions that make up the vast Bordeaux wine area. Located on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, north of Bordeaux, it is famous for having some of the best French wines. However, in the 17th century, the Médoc was an unpleasant and hostile region, covered by marshland, where you could only have livestock at most. It was thanks to Dutch merchants, the great experts in fighting water, who developed an ambitious drainage system to turn the area into a thriving vineyard region. One of the properties that can most boast of having been around in this region for many years is Château de Camensac, an estate that was built in the 18th century and that since 2014 has been managed by Jean Merlaut and his niece Céline Villars-Foubet. Two entrepreneurs who, in search of excellence and the best expression of the terroir, have made numerous technical investments under the supervision of the prestigious winemaker Eric Boissenot. All this work has allowed them to recover the brilliance and fame that Château Camensac had when it was a 5eme Cru Classé in the Official Classification of 1855.

Their wine of the same name, Château de Camensac, is a blend of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties. Made from a total of 86 hectares of vines planted in deep gravel soil, these vines enjoy an oceanic microclimate with mild winters and warm summers and are cultivated using integrated agriculture with biodynamic studies. Harvests are manual and selective according to the varieties, the age of the vines and the terroir. In the winery, the best grapes are again selected and, once destemmed and pressed, they are fermented at a constant temperature (28ºC) for 6 days with daily pumping over, followed by a 3-week maceration. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels (60% new barrels) where it remains for 14 to 18 months. Finally, it is clarified with egg white before a final racking for bottling.

With an average annual production of about 20,000 bottles, Château de Camensac is the living image of its terroir. An elegant, modern and refined wine that, as the label suggests, departs from the classic image of the Great Wines of Bordeaux, while maintaining excellence at all times. A great little treasure!
