This is precisely the approach that Felipe Gutiérrez and his wife Pilar Sapena embraced in the 1970s when they took the helm of their family vineyards in the Marina Alta region of Alicante. They innovated by using the traditional grape variety, Moscatel, not for crafting sweet fortified wines as was customary, but for producing a dry, crisp, and aromatic white wine. This revolutionary move established him as the preeminent master of this Alicante grape.

An exemplar of their craft can be found in Gutiérrez de la Vega Casta Diva Cosecha Dorada, a single-varietal Moscatel originating from 40-year-old vines rooted in clay-limestone soil, nestled between the sea and the mountains in the Jalón Valley. The vineyard is organically farmed, and the grapes are handpicked. Upon arrival at the winery, they are directly pressed and undergo fermentation for 15 days in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is then aged on lees for 5 months.

With its limited production, Gutiérrez de la Vega Casta Diva Cosecha Dorada represents the first dry Moscatel wine in the annals of Spanish wine history. It offers a unique experience that signifies a pivotal moment in the trajectory of this star variety within the D.O. Alicante, which, without being fortified, pairs exceptionally well with Mediterranean cuisine.
