About Carpetano de Valquejigoso

A great winegrower and one of the best winemakers in the world, Raúl Pérez is considered the founder of the new Ribeira Sacra (Galicia). But that’s not all... Because wherever he goes, everything he touches turns to gold. And if we add to that a collaboration with Valquejigoso, one of the Madrid wineries that really champions the character of its terroir, the result couldn’t possibly be more spectacular. An idyllic landscape where Raúl didn’t want to miss the opportunity to make his most personal interpretation of the Madrid Garnacha, a grape that provides great flavours on the palate for people all around the world.

Carpetano is a result of this collaboration. A 100% Garnacha red wine from old vines in the area of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos (Madrid). These vines are planted in granitic soils and grow under extreme temperatures both in winter and summer, but always with limited relative humidity. Among the various oaks trees, the vines are cultivated following the principles of respectful agricultural and, once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested and selected by hand in the vineyard. In the winery, the grapes are refrigerated and undergo a second selection before being vatted by gravity in small cone-shaped tanks and French oak vats. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, after which the wine is aged in 5,000-litre French oak foudres for 12 months before bottling.

Considering that Raúl is a tireless winemaker who has been involved in the production of more than 200 wines that are among the best in the world, Carpetano is his introduction to demonstrating the wonders of a fresh, smooth and very mineral Madrid Garnacha.
