About Belguardo Ciliegiolo
The surname Mazzei carries significant weight, and rightly so. Its history dates back to 1398, when Ser Lapo Mazzei, a notary by profession and an aficionado of fine wine, penned one of the earliest known documents mentioning Chianti as a wine-producing region. Since then, he has been revered as the "father of Chianti Classico".
But the story did not end there. Following Ser Lapo, 25 generations of the Mazzei family have continued to cultivate vineyards and refine the art of winemaking in Tuscany. Today, that legacy is more vibrant than ever, with the family overseeing a total of 194 hectares of vineyards, spread across some of Italy's most iconic wine regions. From the historic Castello di Fonterutoli in the heart of Chianti Classico, through the modern and dynamic Tenuta Belguardo in the Maremma, to Zisola, their Sicilian venture in the Noto area.
Specifically, near the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the maritime breeze caresses the vines and the sun bathes the hills of the Maremma, lies Tenuta Belguardo. An estate that has belonged to the Mazzei family since the 1990s, representing their boldest commitment to viticultural renewal beyond Chianti.
Spanning 110 hectares, Belguardo benefits from soils rich in pebbles derived from ancient sandstones, which impart minerality and character to the wine. At approximately 100 metres above sea level, with a westward exposure ensuring uniform ripening, grow the vines of ciliegiolo, an indigenous Tuscan variety that is increasingly gaining admirers for its expressiveness and freshness.
The grapes are harvested by hand, preserving the tradition and personal care for each cluster. Subsequently, the grapes undergo a 12-day maceration in concrete tanks, a method that gently extracts aromatic and colour compounds, maximising respect for varietal purity.
Belguardo Ciliegiolo perfectly embodies Lapo Mazzei's vision: modernity with deep roots. With a fruity freshness, vibrant acidity, and that mineral touch, it wonderfully showcases all that the Maremma terroir can offer.
