Hans Oliver Spanier really needs no introduction. HO, as he is known in the winemaking world, has been a leading producer of Riesling for years. A consistent and hard-working perfectionist as a young man, he had all he needed to become a professional athlete. However, a serious car accident forced him to retire from racing and, as a result, he turned his attention to oenology. So, at the age of 20, he founded his own winery in Höhen-Sülzen in Rhineland-Hesse (Germany) and as time has passed, the vines have aged and he has grown in experience, he has produced an impressive portfolio of wines and become an expert among the new generation winemakers in Rheinhessen. He wines are known for their great mineral depth and accessibility.
Among the wide range of wines he makes every year, Battenfeld Spanier Eisquell Riesling Trocken is a great introduction. This wine comes from a strict selection of Riesling grapes planted on steep limestone slopes in the VDP Rheinhessen. Using organic agriculture with biodynamic practices, Spanier works the vineyard intensively with very reduced yields and time-consuming manual harvesting. In the winery, the grapes are meticulously selected. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts in used large wooden casks and stainless steel vats. Finally, to give greater complexity, the wine remains on its lees for a long time.
An introduction to Hans Oliver’s wines, Battenfeld Spanier Eisquell Riesling Trocken is a fruity, fresh and tasteful wine. An authentic Riesling with such impressive value for money that you won’t want to miss out.
