Barbeito 3 Years Medium Sweet is a chocolate-coloured fortified wine with notes of raisins, hazelnuts, molasses and caramel on the nose. On the palate it is smooth, complete and with a good texture that leaves a little sweetness in the aftertaste.
Barbeito 3 Years Medium Sweet is a fortified medium-dry Tinta Negra Mole (Negramoll) single-variety wine produced by the Vinhos Barbeito winery, on the island of Madeira, Portugal.
Vinhos Barbeito was founded in 1964 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos, who died in 1985. Since then, his daughter Manuela Vasconcelos has been running this business that has always been a family winery. In fact, since 1993 another member of the family, Ricardo Freitas, has been in charge of winemaking and he continues to work with the philosophies of quality and a unique style.
The grapes used to make Barbeito 3 Years Medium Sweet come from vineyards in the Strait of Câmara de Lobos and São Vicente. After pressing, the resulting must is fermented, and this fermentation is stopped by adding 96% wine alcohol at the right moment to get the right level of sweetness. Then the traditional Madeira winemaking process known as Estufagem is carried out, which involves heating the wines and trying to simulate the temperature and movement conditions that they would have experienced during a long sea voyages. The resulting wine is aged in oak barrels for three years before being bottled.
