About Anselmo Mendes Loureiro Private
In recent years, there has been a surge in interest in indigenous grape varieties and the pursuit of more distinctive and authentic wines. This trend is partly attributed to consumers' growing desire to explore new and unique flavors and aromas, coupled with increasing concerns about sustainability and the preservation of crop diversity. Indeed, wines from indigenous varieties are considered special because they embody the identity and history of a particular region. Each grape variety possesses unique characteristics that are shaped by factors such as climate, soil, and viticultural practices specific to a region, rendering their wines inimitable and challenging to replicate elsewhere. In the case of the loureiro grape variety, a native vine of northern Portugal that was once at risk of extinction due to waning demand, it has experienced a resurgence in the past decades thanks to the dedication of vintners who are working diligently to preserve the genetic diversity of plants and protect biodiversity. One such champion is Anselmo Mendes, a renowned Portuguese winemaker noted for his focus on indigenous Portuguese grape varieties and his commitment to crafting high-quality wines that reflect the unique character of each region.
Thus, he introduces his limited production "Private" collection, showcasing monovarietal wines from recovered grapes such as this Anselmo Mendes Loureiro Private. This wine is crafted from the loureiro variety sourced from Anselmo's various estates along the Lima Valley, on both banks of the Lima River, in Minho (Vinho Verde), where the vines grow on granitic and slate soils at an altitude of 35 meters. Respectful farming practices are employed, and the harvest is manual with selection in the vineyard itself, with the grapes promptly transported to the winery in small boxes. There, the whole, destemmed grapes are gently pressed, and the resulting must undergoes a prolonged cold clarification. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks where it remains for 9 months with regular bâtonnage. Finally, it is released to the market after a year in the bottle.
With a vision to extract the utmost freshness and aromatic purity of the loureiro variety, Anselmo not only revives a nearly forgotten local variety but also, with Anselmo Mendes Loureiro Private, manages to present it with an exceptional concentration and expression.
