About Álvaro Palacios Gratallops
Álvaro Palacios Gratallops is an organic red wine coupage of the Garnacha, Samsó (Cariñena) and other white varieties produced by the Álvaro Palacios winery, under the D.O.Q. Priorat, in Catalonia.
This “Vi de Vila” is made with clusters from eleven plots: Ermites, Torrent, Coll del Corral, Camp d’en Piqué, Socarrats, Carrerada, Les Sorts, Mas d’en Pallarès, Manyetes, L’Ermita and L’Hort de l’Olivar in Gratallops, a wine region in Tarragona, Spain, composed of the area’s characteristic slate soils (llicorella) and vines aged between 15 and 70 years old.
When the grapes reach the winery, they are destemmed and lightly pressed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in small wooden tubs with occasional cap plunges. The resulting wine ages for 16 to 18 months in oval tanks and French oak bocoyes, a type of large barrel.
In this coupage of two red varieties, Garnacha and Samsó, there is also a very small amount of local white grapes like Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and Pedro Ximénez.
All wines signed by Álvaro Palacios, the Priorat wizard, are guaranteed to be elegant and refined. They have turned him into a leading figure in international viticulture and are some of the best and most sought after wines in the world.

|
2022 | Álvaro Palacios Gratallops Magnum 2022 is a fluid red wine with a mineral freshness and hints of oak. This is somewhat curious and paradoxical, especially considering the hot and extreme summer experienced that year. However, the starting point was good, with rain in November that provided the necessary reserves to the soil. This red wine enjoys a fruity and very flavorful heart. |
|

2009 | This wine has a wide and bulky attack and a long, very silky and tasty mid palate, full of juicy notes of fruit and balsamic aromas, with a great creaminess and an incredible mineral background. It is meaty and shows a complete structure. Its polished but slightly dry tannins still need some time to round out. This wine has an excellent acidity and a very long and persistent finish with fruity and mineral sensations.
Excellent wine from Priorat, which reflects the grapes and the terroir of this region. Very elegant and very expressive wine. A pleasure for all the senses. Intense, deep cherry colour with purple edges. Clean and bright wine with a high robe. Dense, slow-falling tears. Very attractive. Intense, very Mediterranean, very complex and seductive aromas. Its abundant notes of quite fleshy ripe black fruit with a nuance of liquor are released with a huge minerality that completes the set without covering other aromas. After swirling the glass, an explosion of aromas is released which range from the hot and sweet spices and the abundant balsamic notes to the nuances of black coffee, cocoa, elegant toasted hints and smoke, wrapped in a tasty and seductive creaminess. A subtle touch of violets is also noticed when the wine is already widely opened. |
|
2008 | It has a good, soft and elegant attack and a long, silky and very tasty mid palate, full of juicy fruit and balsamic aromas. A fleshy wine with a great structure. Polished, ripe and very pleasant tannins and an excellent, integrated acidity. Round and balanced wine. Long and very persistent finish with an aftertaste of ripe fruit. Elegant smoked notes are felt at retro-olfaction.
A pleasant, delicate and elegant estate wine from Priorat, with its own personality. Dark, deep and intense cherry colour with intense purple edges. Very bright wine with a high robe. Dense and slightly coloured, slow-falling tears. Intense, clean, complex and seductive nose. Its aromas of ripe black fruit are harmoniously mixed with refined toasted notes and mineral hints. It gradually gains in expressivity and nuances and deep and refreshing mint and balsamic notes (eucalyptus) are released. Some hints of aromatic herbs, creamy spices, quite roasted notes, black coffee, cocoa and smoked nuances are also felt on a soft, elegant and very mineral background. |

2007 | A splendid entry, smooth and refined; it delivers an extensive, silky, and exceptionally palatable experience, brimming with fruit and aromatic balsamic qualities. A meaty wine with a remarkable structure. Tannins are well-tamed, ripe and exceedingly pleasant. The acidity is superbly integrated. It's well-rounded and harmonious. The finish is extensive and notably persistent, leaving an aftertaste of ripe fruit and sophisticated smoky notes on the finish. In essence, this wine is a delightful pleasure; it embodies character, finesse, and grace. The color is a deep cherry red, intense with vibrant purple hues. It has a high layer and is extremely luminous. The tears are dense, slow to fall, and slightly colored. The bouquet is clean, potent, complex, and alluring. There are aromas of ripe black fruit in harmony with subtle roasted nuances and mineral undertones. Gradually, it becomes more expressive and nuanced, presenting profound and refreshing balsamic scents (eucalyptus) and hints of menthol. There are memories of aromatic herbs, creamy spices, more pronounced toasted notes, black coffee, cocoa, and smoky touches, all laid upon a gentle and elegant mineral backdrop. |
