About Altún Villacardiel

Stone wine presses are historic structures used for wine production that are carved directly into the rock. These are ancient grape pressing facilities that have been found in various wine regions around the world and demonstrate the importance of wine production over the centuries. In Laguardia, in Rioja Alavesa, a leading wine-growing area, some of these wine presses have been preserved as cultural heritage and demonstrate the importance of wine production in the region’s history. One of the family wineries that takes great care to preserve this winemaking tradition is Bodegas Atún. Founded in 1989 by José Antonio Martínez and currently run by his sons Iker and Alberto, the project stands out for its ability to combine ancient winemaking methods with the efficiency of the most modern techniques. The result is unique single-plot wines that perfectly reflect the origin of the terroir.

Their Altún Villacardiel wine comes from a 19-hectare plot lying at 630 metres altitude at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, whose Tempranillo vines are planted on shallow, calcareous soil. This plot lies in an archaeological area where they have found the remains of cave wine presses carved into the rock, authentic testimonies of wine-making being an important part of the region’s past. The work is carried out in an environmentally-friendly manner, and the grapes are harvested by hand in 11 kg boxes. In the winery, the grapes are selected and destemmed, and the berries are separated from the stems. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts and temperature control, and maceration lasts about 15 days. The wine is then aged for 8 months in French oak barrels and 6 months in concrete vats.

2021

Altún Villacardiel 2021 is a smooth red wine with black fruit aromas, notes of violet flowers and spicy hints. The palate is ample, pleasant and unctuous. A medium-bodied wine with polished tannins, vibrant acidity and a long finish with well-integrated oak.
