About Catena Paraje Altamira Malbec

In 1804 the Napoleonic Code was established in France. Under Napoleon Bonaparte, who at the time was the country’s first consul, this text laid the foundations for the New Regime, putting an end to feudal rights and the old laws prior to the French Revolution. Issues like inheritance were regulated by requiring that land belonging to the deceased be divided equally among the heirs. As a result, many vineyards were divided into small, independent portions of land owned by the same family.

Today this text, albeit with major modifications, is still in force and has influenced much of the legislation of other Western countries. This was the case in Argentina, where the same system of inheritance distribution was used, with the vineyards also divided into small properties (some of them no larger than four hectares). This tradition, which has been part of this country’s history for centuries, is captured by the Catena Zapata winery in their collection of Catena Appellation wines, which includes Catena Paraje Altamira Malbec. This range, recreated in the style of the finest Vins de Village from Bordeaux, is made up of eight wines, each one dedicated to a terroir in the Uco Valley, in the province of Mendoza. As the name suggests, Catena Paraje Altamira Malbec flourishes in Altamira, the westernmost and highest vineyard in the district of La Consulta (at the foot of los Andes) which is characterised by a high concentration of silts and clays (which makes it a much cooler soil than the rest of the area). This results in a much more elegant and mineral Malbec, with a very surprising and interesting texture.

All this character is extracted by the maceration processes in the winery. Both before and after fermentation, Catena Paraje Altamira Malbec stays in contact with the skins (16 days and 10 days respectively). This entire process, which requires no intervention of any kind, ends with 12 months in barrels and bottling (without filtering or clarifying). Nothing should mask the flavour of Argentina’s rural regions!
