About Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva San Francesco

Piedmont is a real labyrinth of denominations. In total, this area of northern Italy has, between the Denominazione di'Origine Controllata (D.O.C) and the Denominazione di'Origine Controllata e Garantitta (D.O.C.G), a total of 58 denominations creating a great variety of wines. Some emerged earlier than others. However, most of them became official during the 20th century. This does not mean that there was no interest in wine in the past (far from it), in fact, the Romans were the first to plant vineyards here, at the foot of the Alps, but there was a widespread belief that quantity was better than quality.

Nevertheless, there is always an exception that breaks rule. And in this case it was Mario Antoniolo, a young man who in 1948 had already begun to recognise the importance of the soil, identifying different plots and special areas. In short: he began to make sense of winemaking. Today, following this philosophy, Antoniolo Societá Agricola continues to operate and produce some of the most renowned and important wines of northern Italy, like Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva San Francesco

Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva San Francesco is a single-variety Nebbiolo made from grapes grown in San Francesco, one of the estates the current 86 hectares this winery owns are divided into. This plot (about 3.5 hectares) is located on hillsides, at an altitude of 390 metres above sea level. Today, Lorella and Alberto Zoppis Antoniolo (Mario’s grandchildren) take care of the 60+ year old west-facing vineyards, which are planted on volcanic soil. In this soil, which is fully drained, the vines can sink their roots perfectly, while benefitting from the continental climate (with cold winters and very hot summers).

In the winery, Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva San Francesco comes into contact with three materials. Firstly the cement, where it ferments spontaneously and spends 18 days macerating. From there, it is aged for a minimum of three years in used barrels and French oak casks. Finally, as set out by the denomination, Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva San Francesco is aged for one year in the cellar before being released for sale. A pioneer in northern Italy.
