About Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva Osso San Grato

If there is one name to keep in mind when talking about red wines from the Italian Piedmont, it is Antoniolo Societá Agricola, a northern Italian winery that currently represents the excellence of Italian wines.

This greatness is partly down to Mario Antoniolo, a young man who bought a vineyard in the 1940s, which belonged to a 15th century monastery, to start making wine. This work, which was already common in the area, would allow him to support himself in this village in the province of Vercelli, where he had decided to stay having falling in love with a young woman from here. However, Mario’s mentality was very different from the prevailing one of the time, where quantity came before quality. On the contrary, Mario began to focus on the identity of the soil, on the plots, and began to give prominence to the terroir. He started a tradition in the area where plots began to appear on labels, like Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva Osso San Grato

Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva Osso San Grato is a red wine made from the Nebbiolo that grows in Osso San Grato, one of the plots into which the D.O.C.G. Gattinara is divided into (currently consisting of about 86 hectares). In this area, where the Romans had planted vineyards, the vines grow very close to the Andes, on slopes between 270 and 400 metres above sea level. The area has a wide variety of soils, including volcanic gravels, where old vines (more than 30 years old) manage to take root. This quality and good ripening is also achieved thanks to the continental climate, which is dry and cold, and the temperature contrast between day and night is quite significant.

In terms of winemaking, Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva Osso San Grato is similar to any other Nebbiolo from this winery. The grapes, which have been carefully harvested, arrive at the winery and are processed. Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva Osso San Grato is fermented in stainless steel tanks and macerated for about 18 days on its skins before being devatted. Finally, as the denomination indicates, Antoniolo Gattinara Riserva Osso San Grato is aged for almost 3 years in French or Slavonian oak barrels, which is rounded off with a year of refinement in the bottle.

Production is very limited. So don’t miss the opportunity to taste this marvel.
