Crianza wine

The commencement of an extensive journey

A perfect balance between fruit and oak. Few wines worldwide can rival the designation of Vino Crianza in Spain. This classification, applicable to reds, whites, and rosés, encompasses all wines that have undergone a minimum of two years of ageing before being released to the market. For reds, the requirement is set at 24 months, with 6 of those months in oak barrels of up to 330 litres. In the case of whites and rosés, the total ageing period remains at 18 months, with at least 6 months in barrels.

However, as with any good rule, there is always an exception. In this instance, the DOCa. Rioja and the DO. Ribera del Duero establish their own criteria for reds. Both denominations agree on maintaining the ageing period at 24 months; however, for reds, they extend the barrel time to 12 months (in the case of DO. Rioja, in 225-litre barrels). For whites and rosés, both denominations remain unchanged.

Thus, depending on their contact with oak, Vinos Crianza exhibit a blend of youth and maturity, revealing characteristics that can only be achieved through ageing. Notes of dried fruits, hints of honey, truffles, mushrooms, tobacco, liquorice, or vanilla are just some of the nuances that may emerge (which in turn depend on the type of oak used).
