About Viúva Gomes Pirata da Viúva Castelão

Fourth and fifth generations. Father and son. One land and a singular vision: to preserve the traditional wines of Colares.

This mission currently sets the course at Viúva Gomes, a winery located in Almoçageme, a village within the D.O.C. Colares - in the northwest of Portugal - right on the Sintra coast. Historically, this area, where the Romans once produced wine, gained global recognition as its vineyards - planted on sandy soils - were among the few in Europe to resist phylloxera, an insect from America that devastated vines by attacking their roots (the pest could not thrive in such soils). However, paradoxically, these centennial vineyards did not survive the onslaught of coastal real estate speculation. Today, transformed into a summer haven for Portugal's wealthiest, it is one of the most endangered wine regions in the world with merely 23 hectares and very limited production of 4,500 bottles.

The remaining vineyards - nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the interior hills - consist of very old, ungrafted vines with European rootstock, influenced by maritime storms: perhaps the closest insight into what Europeans drank before the pest's arrival. For Viúva Gomes, these wines are more than just products; they are conceived as an extension of their identity, beliefs, and personal taste, into which they pour "all their passion". A prime example is Viúva Gomes Pirata da Viúva Castelão.

The name is quite fitting, as this wine is born from Viúva Gomes' explorations along the Sintra coast, where they have selected grapes of the castelão variety, grown in various plots on clay-limestone soil, to then be transferred to stainless steel tanks where they spontaneously ferment. Throughout the process, nothing is added, save for a minimal amount of sulfur. Ultimately, Viúva Gomes Pirata da Viúva Castelão matures in old chestnut and mahogany barrels.

"We believe in authentic wines, tied to their place and terroir of origin, advocating minimal intervention in the winery". There's nothing better than a bottle of Viúva Gomes Pirata da Viúva Castelão to get acquainted with them... and see for yourself.
