From a young age, Javier San Pedro Ortega was at his grandfather's side, from whom he learned everything necessary to work the vineyard. When he turned 17, just shy of adulthood, he launched his first wine. This milestone marked the starting point of a new journey that has proven to be more than satisfactory. Along the way, there was much sacrifice, effort, experimentation, and trials, such as Viuda Negra Finca Villahuercos, a white wine that was born through empirical methods.
Javier San Pedro Ortega began his path by planting a vineyard, specifically about 0.90 hectares where he chose to cultivate tempranillo blanco, a native grape of the D.O. Ca. Rioja. This plot came to be known as Villahuercos, and on its clay-limestone soils, Javier devoted himself to experimenting during his studies. A bit of barrel fermentation here, a few months of aging in French oak barrels there, and voilà! Today, Viuda Negra Finca Villahuercos is the flagship white of the house and one of the most special wines you can find in this denomination.
Curious and nonconformist by nature, Javier San Pedro Ortega is crowned with Viuda Negra Finca Villahuercos as one of the finest white wine producers in the D.O. Ca. Rioja. Who would have told that 17-year-old?
