About Petrakopoulos Palia Armakia Robola of Kefalonia

One of the most prominent noble families in Byzantium (Greece) were the Melissinos, whose members held important positions in the world of politics and the church. But after the fall of Constantinople in the middle of the 15th century, the Melissinos were forced to seek refuge on the island of Kefalonia and this is where the family began a new era, still as one of the most prestigious groups. One descendant of this family is Nikos Petrakopoulos, an entrepreneur who, with the aim of continuing a centuries-old family tradition in the small village of Thiramonas, south of Kefalonia, has been running his own winery since 2002. Together with his talented winemaker Kiki Siameli, they have built one of the most exciting wine projects in Greece by taking advantage of its rich viticultural wealth and promoting the rare local grape varieties Robola, Mavrodaphne and Zakynthino.

One of these rare grapes is found in Petrakopoulos Palia Armakia Robola of Kefalonia, a white wine made from the Robola variety from two vineyards on a famous terroir in Fagias, on the slopes of Mount Ainos. These are 70-year-old vines lying at 500-800 metres above sea level and part of the PDO Robola of Kefalonia. With favourable sun exposure and facing the sea, organic agriculture is practiced and the grapes ripen early. In the winery, the winemaking process is minimalist in style but with great attention to detail because, although only a small amount of sulphite is added during spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks, it is important to remember that the Robola grape is sensitive to oxidation. A challenge that can only succeed using a top quality fruit.

With a distinctive minerality and a surprisingly refreshing natural acidity, Petrakopoulos Palia Armakia Robola of Kefalonia is the most typical example of a premium Robola. A wine that, like all the products of this winery, is the result of experimentation and evolution.

2018

Petrakopoulos Palia Armakia Robola of Kefalonia 2018 is a defined white wine with aromas of white fruit, citrus notes and intense hints of mint and fennel. The palate is lean, energetic and very mineral. A medium-bodied wine with medium-high acidity and a long, savoury finish.
