About Mikra Thira Nikteri 2021
The volcanic eruption of 1660 marked a pivotal moment in the geological history of Santorini, in the Aegean Sea, fragmenting the island and giving birth to the captivating Therasia. This cataclysmic event not only reconfigured the geography but also resulted in unique soils and a distinctive microclimate on this emergent landmass. The amalgamation of minerals and nutrients from the eruption has fostered such ideal conditions for viticulture that three renowned oenologists from the region, Angelis Gerovassiliou, Vassilis Tsaktsarlis, and Ioanna Vamvakouri, were inspired to encapsulate this by establishing the island's first winery, named Mikra Thira; a term meaning "Little Thira" that pays homage to the historical connection of the island with its larger neighbor, Santorini (Thira in Greek).
In pursuit of crafting quality wines that embody the intrinsic virtues of the island, they present wines such as Mikra Thira Nikteri. A blend of the three indigenous varieties assyrtiko, aidani, and athiri that are born, cultivated, and matured in volcanic soils and are farmed with respect for the environment. The grapes are harvested late, and then co-fermented in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts at the winery. Subsequently, the wine is aged for 4 months in barrels and finally bottled, where it remains for a year in the cellar before being released to the market.
As a proud representative of the Protected Designation of Origin Santorini, Mikra Thira Nikteri is introduced as a wine with a unique character. A blend resulting from a singular volcanic terroir that imparts a distinctive singularity to its enjoyment.

On the palate, it caresses with a mineral freshness, attributable to its volcanic terroir, enhanced by a distinctive salinity reminiscent of ocean breezes. Its robust structure and lingering finish herald an elegant maturation over time. |
