About Els Escurçons

The narrative of the Pérez family is one of courage, diligence, and a fervent passion for viticulture. In the 1980s, Josep Lluís Pérez Verdú, alongside René Barbier, Daphne Glorian, Carles Pastrana, and Álvaro Palacios, embarked on a venture in Gratallops with the ambition to transform a forgotten region into a wine-producing benchmark. And they succeeded! Today, Priorat proudly stands as one of the most prestigious Spanish appellations worldwide.

With such a background, it is unsurprising that when Josep Lluís Pérez's daughter, Sara, took the helm of the family winery, she was undaunted by the enormity of the challenge. Her philosophy is clear: “Each generation must be able to make its own interpretation.” Thus, with her vision, she introduces Els Escurçons, a red wine that is undoubtedly one of the great treasures of Mas Martinet.

Mas Martinet Els Escurçons is a distinctive wine crafted from garnacha tinta, sourced from a vineyard situated at an altitude of 600 metres, on the characteristic licorella soils (weathered slate with iron and feldspar). The harvest is manual, with meticulous selection of the grapes in the vineyard, and fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts in a combination of wooden vats and cement tanks. Ultimately, this wine, which embodies the essence of Priorat, undergoes ageing in amphorae and 60-litre demijohns, with an approach that varies according to the vintage, always seeking the utmost expression of its terroir.

With Mas Martinet Els Escurçons, the Pérez family, now under Sara's leadership, continues to leave their mark on the wine world, demonstrating that with dedication, respect for the land, and immense passion, dreams can indeed become reality.

2019

Els Escurçons 2019 is a supple red wine suffused with the scent of violet blossoms, hints of spice, and echoes of red fruit. The palate is greeted with a robust and refreshing introduction, followed by a luscious and exceedingly pleasant progression. This medium-bodied wine boasts a fine acidity and vigor. The finish is refined and protracted.
2018

Els Escurçons 2018 is a red wine that powerfully expresses the elegance and subtlety of the Garnacha with all the character of Priorat. Its surprising lightness and delicacy is reminiscent of the wines of yesteryear. A Garnacha that expresses its most floral side, accompanied by delicious toasted touches, spicy notes and hints of chocolate and mint. In short, one of Priorat’s great wines.
2015 A year marked by the fire that hit the vineyard. The grapes picked up the smoky aromas of the fire and when they started fermenting, they began to reflect in the wine. As a result, we have an atypical and unique year at Escurçons. The smoky notes merge with the intensity of the territory and the lightness of the Grenache variety, in one of the highest farms in Priorat.
