About Mas Estela Quindals

In the year 974, Count Gausfred I of Empúries and Roussillon, known as Count Gaufred, signed the donation of a vast territory to the prosperous monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. However, he set a firm boundary when reaching the Valley of Sant Romà. The nobleman preferred to reserve this exact corner for himself, considering it a place of incomparable beauty, fertility, and wealth. More than a millennium later, in 1989, the Soto-Dalmau family acquired the Mas Estela estate and its surrounding 50 hectares. They then embarked on a painstaking restoration of the farmhouse and its abandoned slopes, convinced that this historic corner needed no chemicals or shortcuts, but rather the care of someone who guards a sacred legacy to allow the land to express its true vocation.

From the municipality of La Selva de Mar, in the Alt Empordà, Mas Estela Quindals comes to life under the protection of the DO Empordà. The grapes come from the vineyards of the Mas Estela estate, nestled on the terraces of the fertile Valley of Sant Romà, just a short distance from the Mediterranean Sea. The vines grow on poor slate soils, a mountain stone that forces the roots to delve deep in search of moisture, imparting a pronounced minerality to the fruit. The climate is thoroughly Mediterranean, shaped by the strong presence of the Tramontana, a north wind that dries the plants after rains and naturally keeps the vineyard healthy. The varieties used are Garnacha Tinta and Syrah, cultivated under strict organic and biodynamic viticulture that respects the biodiversity of the environment.

The winemaking of Mas Estela Quindals is carried out meticulously to preserve the finesse of the fruit. After the harvest, the bunches are destemmed, a process that involves separating the berries from the stalk to avoid astringency, and the grapes undergo a gentle crushing. The must undergoes alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures using native yeasts, those naturally present on the grape skins. Once this process and the malolactic fermentation, the transformation of malic acid into lactic acid to soften the acidity, are completed, the wine undergoes ageing for 9 months in clay amphorae before bottling.

Mas Estela Quindals is an expressive, fresh, and lively red wine. A clear testament that time and respect for the land ultimately offer unforgettable sips.
