About Justinos Verdelho 10 Years

Justinos Verdelho 10 Years is a fortified wine made with the Verdelho white variety by Justino´s Madeira in the DOP Madeira.

Although the Justino´s Madeira brand emerged in 1950, its origins date back to 1870 when Justino Henrique Freitas founded Vinhos Justino Henriques, Filhos, Lda. on the island of Madeira with the aim of producing great wood-aged wines. This winery is currently one of the oldest producers and exporters of Madeira wine with the largest stock of this special fortified wine.

Justinos Verdelho 10 Years comes from vineyards lying on the slopes near the sea. These are small terraces with volcanic soil that cannot be cultivated using machinery because of the Latada and Espalier training systems and the island’s landscape. So they use conventional and manual agriculture.

Once the Justinos Verdelho 10 Years ripe grape reaches the winery, it is destemmed and pressed. Then the must ferments in stainless steel tanks, controlling the temperature and reassembly times. After 6 or 7 days, fermentation is stopped by adding 96% grape spirit. Finally, it ages in American and French oak barrels using the traditional Canteiro system, an aging process where the wine is stored in barrels for periods of 10 years with natural heat.

Justinos Verdelho 10 Years is a great example of a Madeira made with a white variety. A very special fortified wine made from a small production grape.
