About Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo
If Irpina (an area located in the Campania region of southern Italy) is know for one thing, it is the great diversity of microclimates. It is not unusual for the most classic and well-known grapes to surprise us with new versions and expressions. This is true with Merlot.
This grape, from the southwest of France, is one of the most widespread in the world. World-renowned, and with little more to add, this variety impresses us in the Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo red, made by Feudi di San Gregorio. This winery, which was founded in 1986, lies in Sorbo Serpico, one of the villages that make up this region at the foot of the Apennines, a traditional wine-growing region in southern Italy. This project was set up following the great earthquake that devastated the area, when a group of young people decided not just to recover and maintain the area’s productions, but also to experiment and find new things. Today, more than 30 years later, they have achieved this, positioning themselves as one of the most recognised wineries in Italy.
Feudi di San Gregorio currently owns 300 hectares in this region, where volcanic soils and a Mediterranean climate (with great temperature contrasts between day and night) abound. This combination is perfect for grapes, especially for red grapes, since these temperature changes are key not only for quality, but also for the development of anthocyanins (polyphenolic elements found in the grape skins that are responsible for bringing colour). Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo is born in old vineyards planted at 500 metres above sea level, on mainly clay soils. When the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested with great care, working to make sure the grapes reach the winery in good condition.
Once there, Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo is destemmed. After this, Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it ferments at a controlled temperature, followed by a maceration that will last about three weeks. Finally, the wine is devatted, pressed and aged in medium toast French oak barrels for a minimum of 18 months before bottling. This is not the end of the story, as Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo finishes with 10 months in the bottle before being released for sale.

Feudi Di San Gregorio Pàtrimo 2017 is a red wine that on the nose offers captivating aromas of black fruit preserves nuanced with sweet spices such as vanilla, complemented by a hint of refreshing eucalyptus and toasted notes reminiscent of coffee. Its palate is balanced and harmonious, with sweet tannins and a delightful smoothness. A red wine with an exquisite concentration and a lingering persistence of fruity sensations, utterly enchanting.

2016 | Feudi di San Gregorio Patrimo 2016 is a richly concentrated red wine. It boasts a deep ruby hue, clear yet impenetrable. The bouquet reveals an aromatic tapestry of jam and dark berries, sweet spices, eucalyptus, vanilla, and coffee. On the palate, one can also discern the presence of sweet, refined, and velvety tannins. Harmoniously balanced. The finish is extensive and enduring, replete with fruity nuances. |
