About Domane Serrig Kabinett
In 1984, at the tender age of 20, Markus Molitor assumed control of the family winery. However, seemingly unsatisfied with mere triumphs, three decades later—in 2016, to be precise—this wine virtuoso ventured to the hills of the Sarre (in southwestern Germany) where he boldly sought to restore the full glory of the Vogelsang estate. From this new endeavour emerged Domane Serrig and one of its most remarkable wines: Domane Serrig Kabinett.
To trace the origins of this estate, one must journey back much further, to the early 20th century, when it was established under the auspices of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Prussian Empire. At that time, when it was under state control, the wines from this estate became a veritable symbol that today Markus Molitor strives to reclaim. Initially, this does not seem arduous, as the unique conditions of this area appear to be advantageous. Few places can compare to the steep slate slopes (with pronounced gradients), situated between 220 and 340 metres above sea level. In this setting, Markus Molitor meticulously selects the grapes, paying special attention and care to uphold the production standards. The area's cool microclimate aids in prolonging the ripening of the clusters, resulting in a much more balanced wine.
The Riesling of Domane Serrig Kabinett is harvested by hand, and the pre-selected grapes are brought to the winery. Upon arrival, the entire harvest is placed into basket presses, where the must is obtained. Domane Serrig Kabinett is then transferred to oak barrels where it will ferment spontaneously and rest for approximately a year on its lees. After bottling, and as a final touch, two years of bottle ageing will impart the unmistakable character to Domane Serrig Kabinett.
More than just a wine, Domane Serrig Kabinett is a true testament to the state of the Sarre, its history, and all that it encompasses. A region that in the past brought much joy and will undoubtedly continue to do so in the future.
