About Château Ferrière

In 1992, Bernadette Merlaut tragically passed away, and Château Ferrière was inherited by her daughter Claire. This dramatic turn of events marked the beginning of a new approach where the process took precedence over the final product. Thus, Château Ferrière became the first domaine in Médoc to adopt biodynamic practices. 
 
Today, firmly established as a benchmark, Château Ferrière is synonymous with quality, perpetuating a history and tradition that spans 300 years. The origins of this historic estate date back to the late 17th century when Gabriel Ferrière acquired the property in the A.O.C. Margaux. Always associated with the French royal family, where the Ferrière worked as brokers, the estate's wines began to grace the receptions of Louis XV and achieved the classification of troisième cru in the 1855 Bordeaux Official Classification. And rightly so! 
 
Château Ferrière is situated in the heart of Médoc, on the left bank of the Garonne River, on deep gravel and limestone marl soils. Each of the 24 hectares of the estate thrives here, between the Atlantic Ocean and the estuary. This location is quite advantageous as both bodies of water help regulate temperatures. In both summer and winter, the heat and cold are moderated by the temperate oceanic climate. The rest of the credit goes to the Château Ferrière team, who find in biodynamics the best ally to produce great wines: cow horn manure (preparation 500), horsetail decoction (preparation 508), and valerian extract (preparation 507) are some of the remedies used on the estate to ensure the vines' fruit reaches its full potential. Specifically, more than a third of the vines were planted in the 1950s, offering highly concentrated fruits with a high sugar content. All of these are transformed in the winery through fermentations with natural yeasts and gentle pump-overs. Notably, Château Ferrière is also one of the few estates that maintains biodynamic certification in the winery. In this regard, the work at Château Ferrière is incredibly meticulous, treating each parcel separately to achieve the best possible expression of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, and cabernet franc.
 
Last but not least, Château Ferrière undergoes about 18 months of ageing in containers made of various materials: new oak barrels, concrete eggs, and even amphorae. The precise blend of all these elements is what makes Château Ferrière such a special wine.
