About Castro Ventosa Valtuille Villegas

The Pérez family are quintessential winegrowers from the Bierzo region (in the province of León, Spain). Their commitment to viticulture is so profound that there are preserved documents dating back to 1752 in which an ancestor wrote that anyone attending his funeral would be offered “a glass of fortified wine and a piece of bread produced at home.” Situated in the town of Valtuille, the contemporary generation, led by the renowned Raúl Pérez and his nephew César Márquez, have adeptly revived ancestral methods and indigenous grape varieties to create highly exclusive, top-quality wines that have garnered international acclaim.

Under the label Castro Ventosa, named in homage to the Roman archaeological site near their estate, they craft wines such as Castro Ventosa Valtuille Villegas. This blend of mencía, alicante bouschet, and other local red varieties hails from a singular plot with vines over 100 years old, rooted in predominantly sandy soil. Organic farming is practiced, and the grapes are handpicked at the ideal point of ripeness. Once in the winery, 100% of the whole grapes are placed into open 3,000-liter foudres and undergo fermentation with native yeasts. There, the wine macerates for 60 days with daily cap submersion. Finally, the wine is aged in 500-liter barrels of multiple uses for 12 months.
