About Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz
Starting from scratch is difficult, you have to have well defined goals to make sure you don’t give up along the way. And if there was one thing David Powell knew when he finished his degree in economics, it was that he didn’t want to be stuck in an office. So, with a backpack in hand, he went off to travel the world. During this journey, it was his time in the Scottish forests, in Torbreck, that really left a mark. He worked hard there as a woodcutter and also met his wife. An Australian woman who encouraged him to go to the other side of the world and set up their own wine project together. In homage to their meeting place, they set up Torbreck in 1994, a legendary winery located in the Barossa Valley in South Australia.
There is a clear nod to his time spent in the Scottish forests as a woodcutter in his Torbreck Woodcutter’s Shiraz, a red wine made from Australia’s most popular grape variety, Syrah, grown in vineyards that are cultivated in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way and harvested by hand. In the winery, the grapes macerate and ferment in open vats and are gently pressed in baskets. The wine is then aged on fine lees for 12 months in large barrels and foudres.
Today, Torbreck Woodcutter’s Shiraz is high on the best wine lists. A well-deserved position for its incredible value for money. A wine praised for its succulence and richness that honours the origins of the project.
