Although it is not known for certain, legend has it that for centuries the high clergy of Trier Cathedral reserved the production of a small hillside vineyard nestled by the Mosel River. This was not out of whim or a desire for ostentation, but because from that natural amphitheatre emerged a wine of such superlative finesse and aromatic richness that it seemed only worthy of grand ecclesiastical solemnities. That enclave came to be known as the Prelate's Vineyard. Years later, Markus Molitor, the unmistakable winemaker who has dedicated his life to restoring the historical greatness of this region, saw in that same slope the opportunity to touch the heavens. From the town of Ürzig, in the heart of the Middle Mosel in Germany, Markus Molitor Erdener Prälat Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is protected under the Mosel designation. The century-old vines tenaciously cling to the Erdener Prälat vineyard, a mythical enclave of barely one and a half hectares, considered one of the most valuable terroirs in the country. Situated on a dizzying slope that exceeds a 70% gradient and facing completely south, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate surrounded by massive rock cliffs that act as a shield against the wind and retain heat throughout the day. The soil is characterised by its distinctive red slate, a poor terrain very rich in minerals that absorbs solar radiation and returns it to the roots during the night. Cultivated to the millimetre with the Riesling variety, the viticulture relies on extremely demanding manual labour, without the use of heavy machinery due to the slope's inclination, respecting the plant's natural balance and applying sustainable methods.

The winemaking of Markus Molitor Erdener Prälat Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is a work of artisanal precision akin to goldsmithing. The harvest is carried out strictly by hand and in several passes through the vineyard, selecting only the grapes that have reached exceptional ripeness and show a noble development of botrytis, the noble rot or beneficial fungus that naturally concentrates the sugars and acids in the grape. After a rigorous grape-by-grape selection upon arrival at the winery, the pressing is carried out very gently and the must undergoes a slow and spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, the yeasts naturally present on the grape skins, in large traditional German oak foudres. Fermentation is naturally halted to preserve the balance between residual glucose and the wine's vivacity, after which it rests on its fine lees for months to gain structure before being bottled with the distinguished golden capsule.
