About El Inquilino Viura

A good tenant is recognised instantly. They are someone who crosses the threshold with care, tending to every corner with the same affection as the owner and respecting the home's rules without imposing their own customs. When the brothers Sanz (Iñaki, Xabier, and Mikel), at the helm of the renowned Navarrese project Viña Zorzal Wines, decided to cross the regional border with their partner Rafa Regadera to settle in La Rioja, they did so with the same philosophy of elegance and restraint. They did not come to teach lessons or to alter the landscape with artifice, but to listen, recover indigenous varieties, and practise minimal intervention viticulture. Their objective was clear: to produce wines that steer clear of the traditional heavy oak excess, demonstrating that it is possible to honour the identity of a neighbouring area by offering a fresh, direct, and profoundly honest perspective.

From the Najerilla Valley, in the prestigious DOCa Rioja, El Inquilino Viura comes from old vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The altitude and orientation of this area in the Rioja Alta favour a slow ripening of the grapes, preserving impeccable natural acidity. The soils are varied, with calcareous and clay presence, ideal for providing water balance and volume on the palate. The climate is a transitional Atlantic with Mediterranean nuances, characterised by mild summers and cool nights that preserve the fruit's freshness. Made entirely from Viura, the region's emblematic white grape variety, the vineyard is managed under a philosophy of cultivation that respects the environment and biodiversity, with careful hand harvesting to ensure the integrity of each bunch.

The production of El Inquilino Viura is carried out through an artisanal process focused on highlighting the purity of the fruit with just the right touch of oak. After the hand-harvested grapes are received, the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation using exclusively native yeasts, the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. This fermentation takes place in 500-litre French oak barrels. In these same barrels, malolactic fermentation occurs, transforming malic acid into lactic acid, which softens the acidity and adds a creamy texture. Finally, the wine completes a 4-month ageing period in the same 500-litre French oak barrels of second use, a large and used wood format that does not mask the primary aromas and allows the wine to gain structure without losing its agility.

El Inquilino Viura is a refined, expressive, and well-balanced white. It is clear evidence that the best way to enter a great region is with absolute respect for its land.
