Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken 2022 exhibits a deep red hue with violet highlights. On the nose, it reveals aromas of juicy cherries, ripe plums, and subtle hints of strawberry, complemented by nuances of vanilla and toasted notes from its maturation in wooden barrels. About Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken

Since the 1980s, Philipp Wittmann has been cultivating his vineyards biodynamically. Adopting this distinctive approach back then, which today seems much more familiar, positioned him as a true pioneer in Germany. Nowadays, there are few wines more authentic and original than those of Philipp, especially his pinot noir. Take a sip of Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken and you'll understand what we mean. 
 
Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken is a red wine originating from the left bank of the Rhine River, in the VDP Rheinhessen. This region, which the Romans already saw potential in, is one of the largest in Germany. Here, in the municipality of Worms, Philipp Wittmann owns approximately 30 hectares. This designation, also known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, boasts particularly fertile soil where the rocky base mingles with clay and loess. Additionally, the area enjoys a significant amount of sunshine annually (about 1,600 hours) and minimal rainfall (less than 550 mm). This makes the region one of the driest in the country, requiring the vines to exert considerable effort to produce fruit by late spring, resulting in few but high-quality grapes with concentrated sugars. This subsequently translates in the winery to a higher amount of glucose that the indigenous yeasts will need to process, yielding wines with higher alcohol content. 
 
In the case of Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken, the grapes are harvested manually once they have reached their optimal ripeness. From the vineyard, they are taken to the winery where the transformation from must to wine is carried out with minimal intervention. For Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken, this entire process takes place in impressive cellars built in 1829, where Philipp has around eighty wooden barrels (some of them centuries-old) in which Wittmann Spätburgunder Trocken undergoes its aging.
