About Von Winning Pechstein GG Riesling
The top of the top. The best of the best. The very peak of quality. That is how we would describe Von Winning Pechstein GG Riesling, a dry German white wine produced in the Palatinate (the western part of the country).
Von Winning Pechstein GG Riesling is a wine made within the VDP Grosses Gewächs. This classification system, set up in 1910, aims to guarantee both the quality and origin of German wines. Only 200 wineries have the privilege of being able to display its different categories on their bottle labels. Wines labelled VDP Grosses Gewächs are made from extraordinary vineyards, some of them centuries old, where only high quality grapes grow on unique soils.
As the name suggests, the Von Winning Pechstein GG Riesling wine starts life in Pechstein, one of the vineyards located towards the north of the 42 hectares owned by this winery (founded in the 18th century). This vineyard takes its name from Pechsteinkopf, the extinct volcano that once stood in the area, with vines grown between 120 and 150 metres above sea level. In this case, the slopes face towards the southeast, which allows the volcanic rock soils to warm up enough to bring life to the vines that grow there. It should be noted that the Palatinate is perhaps the warmest part of Germany.
In the winery, Von Winning Pechstein GG Riesling ferments spontaneously in French oak barrels and is left to mature for almost two years on its lees, giving the wine a unique character that only this century-old winery knows how to do.
