About Viña Mayor Reserva
Throughout history, numerous industries, including the wine industry, have been characterized by gender inequalities and barriers for women. Consequently, when a woman achieves a significant milestone in a traditionally male-dominated field, it is a pivotal moment in the quest for gender equality and serves as an inspiring exemplar for other women seeking careers in similar sectors. Almudena Alberca, a prominent Spanish oenologist who is part of the current generation of wine professionals in Spain, is particularly celebrated for being the first woman in Spain to attain the esteemed title of "Master of Wine" (a designation awarded to individuals who have demonstrated profound knowledge and expertise in the international wine sector). This accomplishment is a testament to her exceptional dedication, outstanding level of knowledge, and prominent international standing. As an oenologist at Viña Mayor, an iconic winery nestled in the heart of the 'golden mile' of the Ribera del Duero (Spain), she is committed to crafting wines that embody the typicity and excellence of the region.
This is exemplified in Viña Mayor Reserva, a monovarietal of tempranillo sourced from vineyards located in the municipality of Quintanilla de Onésimo. Vines over 60 years old are planted at an altitude of approximately 900 meters and are cultivated using traditional agricultural methods. The harvest is carried out manually at the optimal point of ripeness and immediately transported to the winery. The grapes undergo a double selection process on the sorting table, are destemmed, and are gently crushed. They then macerate and ferment in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Finally, the wine is aged for 18 months in 225-liter French oak barrels and is not released to the market until it has spent a minimum of 36 months in the bottle.
As the flagship wine of the winery, Viña Mayor Reserva is distinguished by its pronounced Ribera del Duero personality. It is a wine in which the fruit and wood are well integrated, and the distinctive touch of Master of Wine Almudena Alberca serves as an inspirational benchmark of expertise.
