About Swartberg Wingerde Miracle Bush White
In The Last Crusade, Indiana Jones embarks on a quest for the Holy Grail: a legendary object, yet deeply personal. This is akin to the journey of Rudiger Gretschel, the passionate winemaker behind projects like Vinimark and Reyneke, who embarked on his own crusade... not for a chalice, but for a terroir. One so unique that it would give meaning to a lifetime devoted to wine.
For nearly two decades, he traversed South Africa like a modern-day explorer, through mountains, deserts, and forgotten vineyards. When he finally discovered it in Piekenierskloof, he knew what he had to do. A rugged, elevated, and magical place where vines defy the climate, time, and logic. There, Swartberg Wingerde was born. And with it, a special wine that says it all in its name: Miracle Bush White.
This white blend is composed of chenin blanc, grenache blanc, and palomino, cultivated in bush vineyards and hand-harvested. The palomino comes from one of the oldest vineyards in the country (planted in 1965!) and contributes floral delicacy. The grenache blanc adds depth and structure, while the chenin blanc acts as the backbone: providing freshness, vibrant acidity, and pronounced minerality.
The winemaking is conducted with a meticulous and detailed process. The grapes are harvested manually, ensuring only the finest bunches reach the winery. To preserve their fresh aromas and vitality, the grapes are cooled overnight in refrigeration chambers. They are then whole-bunch pressed, which helps to capture the purity and natural expression of the grapes. Fermentation is spontaneous, with no addition of commercial yeasts, allowing the wine to express itself in the most authentic manner possible.
Aging also plays a crucial role in the creation of this extraordinary wine. The chenin blanc is matured for 9 months in new 225-litre Mittelberger oak barrels, imparting delicate complexity. The grenache blanc is fermented and aged in clay amphorae, giving it a smooth and mineral texture. Meanwhile, the palomino rests in large 2,500-litre foudres, allowing it to develop volume and character without losing freshness.
The result is a complex and elegant wine, with vibrant freshness and a mineral structure that reflects the unique essence of its terroir. Miracle Bush White is not just a wine, but the fruit of a passionate quest that resulted in a true vinous gem.
