About Protos Verdejo

In the red wine territories of León, Protos reigns supreme; however, innovation and leadership are two values that have always been ingrained in this company's DNA. Thus, in 2006, they ventured into whites in the DO. Rueda. This is how Protos Verdejo was born, one of the most renowned and esteemed Spanish wines.

The winery relocated to the village of La Seca in Valladolid to harvest the verdejo growing there, in the company's own vineyards. Specifically, the vines are planted on south-facing slopes, with a rhythm dictated by the summer heat and winter frosts. This thermal contrast, so characteristic of the continental climate, remarkably enables the verdejo to ripen properly despite the long periods of drought, which the plant (less than 25 years old) withstands thanks to its deep roots reaching for water underground. This, combined with daytime sunlight, promotes proper ripening, ensuring a good balance between acidity and sugars.

Only a trained eye and the wisest tradition can discern when Protos Verdejo has reached its optimal point, proceeding with the manual nighttime harvest in 20 kg crates, always selecting the best clusters to be taken to the winery. At this stage, right at the beginning of the winemaking process, the cold maceration of Protos Verdejo is crucial, where the must remains in contact with the skins for about five hours. During this time, the aromatic intensity of Protos Verdejo is maximized, achieving the best possible qualities for fermentation. Finally, the aging on lees for several months will be the second detail that completes the shaping of Protos Verdejo's character.

Currently, Protos Verdejo is one of the most renowned whites, not only satisfying Spanish palates but also daring to conquer the rest of the world. 93 countries across five continents have already succumbed to Protos Verdejo. And you, will you be able to resist?
