About Poggio Archetipo Timorasso Terre Di Libarna Colli Tortonesi
Halfway between the regions of Piedmont and Liguria, we find the Tortona hills (Colli Tortonesi), in the province of Alessandria (Italy). This is an area where viticulture had always been practiced, but through the post-war challenges and the valley’s general depopulation, this activity was gradually lost along with the cultivation of the native Timorasso grape variety. Fortunately, winemakers like Poggio Ezio and other small winemakers in the area have managed to recover the ancient vine and give it a new lease of life. In 2005 they started the project “Lands and Flavours of Excellence” in which the first vineyards and the new DOC Colli Tortonesi denomination were established and then they continued with a second project “Table, Tradition, Territory” dedicated mainly to infrastructures and technological systems for production and bottling.
It is precisely the Timorasso variety that forms the basis of most of the cuvées offered by Poggio at their winery in the municipality of Vignole Borbera. This winery, founded more than 50 years ago, is now run by the third generation, and makes wines like this Poggio Archetipo Timorasso Terre Di Libarna Colli Tortonesi, which demonstrates their mastery of this native white grape variety that is typical of the Colli Tortonesi area. Sourced from one hectare of vineyards lying at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level on clay and limestone soils, it is cultivated with great care using only organic products that respect the environment. The grapes are harvested by hand in crates and then, in the winery, vinification begins with gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. It rests on fine lees for approximately 1 year. Finally, it is further refined in the bottle for at least 6 months before being sold.
Minimising invasive interventions in the vineyard and making use of modern technologies in the winery, Poggio Archetipo Timorasso Terre Di Libarna Colli Tortonesi is the result of a work philosophy that Poggio Ezio has been acquiring since 2005 and that today has made them one of the leading producers of artisan wines in the Tortona hills.
