About Etérea Kripan Phinca Hapa Tinto

A vintner, author, and above all, a fervent advocate for the natural world, Melanie Hickman staunchly believes that every living creature, from the most irrational animals to the most delicate plants, harbors a soul and spirit. This philosophy is vividly mirrored in her passion for viticulture, which led her to invest her entire savings into vineyards situated in Elvillar and Kripan, within the esteemed Rioja Alavesa. Specifically, through her initiative Etérea Kripan, she aims not only to produce biodynamic wines of exceptional quality but also to act as a conduit for restoring to nature some of what she contends we have gradually pilfered over time.

Her wine Etérea Kripan Phinca Hapa Tinto is a blend of tempranillo complemented by a touch of graciano and viura. Vines dating back to 1967 planted on limestone soil at an altitude of 900 meters are cultivated under the Demeter biodynamic certification. The vineyards coexist with fruit trees, plants, and animals, and are tended organically in alignment with the various phases of the moon. Following the manual harvest, the grapes are meticulously selected, destemmed, and crushed to commence a spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats. Subsequently, the wine is aged for 10 months in 500L barrels.

2016 Phinca Hapa Elvillar Tinto is a juicy red wine with aromas of red fruit, fresh berries and wild flowers. It also reveals balsamic notes and mineral touches. On the palate it is a fresh, flavoursome wine with marked tannins and acidity.
