About Massaluca Negre

The Fourth Viaduct of the Matarraña, situated over the Matarraña River and connecting La Pobla de Massaluca (Catalonia) and Fayón (Zaragoza), near its confluence with the Ebro, stands as a quintessential example of railway infrastructure beset by adversity. Constructed as part of the Madrid-Barcelona line, this viaduct faced significant challenges throughout its operational life: in 1931, an avalanche dislodged a 40-tonne rock onto it, causing substantial damage. Subsequently, during the Civil War, the Republican faction deliberately destroyed its central pier. Finally, its ultimate fate was sealed between 1964 and 1969 with the inundation of the valleys by the Ribarroja reservoir, leading to its definitive dismantling. In the face of so many adversities it endured until the end, the Roqueta family, based in the municipality of Pobla de Massaluca, has decided to pay tribute to this railway tunnel, of which today only the tunnel mouth remains, with a very special wine.

This homage takes shape with Massaluca Negre, a wine that embodies the character of the region where the viaduct was born (the tunnel mouth is depicted on the label) and the strength of a legacy deeply rooted in the land. The family project, initiated in 2009 in the DO Terra Alta, combines the varieties garnacha tinta and samsó (carignan), cultivated in a Mediterranean landscape surrounded by olive and almond trees, approximately 400 metres above sea level and in proximity to the Ebro River. In the winery, following a meticulous selection, the grapes are destemmed, crushed, and fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine matures in Central European oak barrels for 6 months.

True to its aim of crafting wines that capture the essence of the Terra Alta, Massaluca Negre is an expression of depth, identity, and authenticity. Thus, the memory of a structure marked by adversity lives on in each bottle, paying homage not only to the history of a viaduct but also to the spirit of a land that continues to look towards the future.
