About Montombra
Winegrower and oenologist Ramon Jané, who owns Mas Candí with his wife Mercè Cuscó, has always believed in the potential of the Garraf. Located in the Arboçar (Avinyonet del Penedès) area, which they think is home to the most beautiful vineyards of the Penedès, they make limited productions of Corpinnat still and sparkling wines that are recognised among the most prestigious circles of minimum intervention.
With 37.6 hectares of their own vineyards and an average production of 60,000 bottles, their wines are very interesting. This Mas Candí Montombra is a Monastrell from a single vineyard grown in the mountains. The inspiration came from Philippe Pacalet, one of the most remarkable winemakers of the Côte des Nuits (Burgundy), but especially from a Californian Monastrell from Dirty and Roway Family Wines that Jané fell in love with so much that he even flew across the Atlantic just to taste it. Once he discovered how it was made, he set to work to create his own interpretation of Monastrell. The vines were planted in 2004 on a mountain with steep slopes and limestone soils, using organic and biodynamic practices. Once the grapes are ready, they are harvested by hand and taken to the winery. Fermentation is carried out with 60% of the stems and native yeasts and, after a gentle pressing, the wine is aged for 8 months in 500-litre French oak barrels.
With the illusion of making a wine from the most beautiful vineyard in the Penedès and wanting to avoid the typical mature and concentrated Monastrell, Mas Candí Montombra was born. A red wine that oozes Mediterranean character but with an elegant Burgundy style.
