About Martín Códax Finca Xieles

Galicia has always been a land linked to the sea, but also to agriculture. Sailors spent long periods at sea, fishing and trading, but when they returned home, they devoted themselves to viticulture on their land. Cultivating vineyards allowed them to have access to wine for their own consumption, and was also a way to earn additional income by selling it in local communities. Martín Codax, a winery set up by a group of winegrowing families in the Rías Baixas region of Galicia (Spain), follows this tradition linked to sailors and zoned its plantations to better control each of the plots. A total of more than 2500 small plots with old vines that allow them to create unique Atlantic wines, the result of a love for the sea and the land.

Among this large number of plots, Finca Xieles has the oldest vines. Just over a hectare of land with sea views, with a steep slope and divided by stone walls. It is home to Albariño vines that were planted at the end of the 19th century in granitic soil, that are not very fertile and produce low yields. This is where Martín Códax Finca Xieles is born, a white wine that honours those who planted and cared for the estate, ancestors of one of the founding members of the cooperative, Benito Castelo Baulo. Following a respectful agriculture and a manual harvest at the optimum point of ripeness, the grapes are taken to the winery to ferment in 1,700-litre concrete eggs with native yeasts. The wine spends 6 months there before being bottled.

Made from the winery’s oldest vines, Martín Códax Finca Xieles aims to be a tribute to the winemaking tradition of the Val do Salnés and to all those families who have maintained it as it should be over the years. A unique wine, from a land of sailors.
