About Marqués de Riscal Viñas Viejas Rosado
Phylloxera destroyed most European vineyards, forcing winegrowers to replant with grape varieties grafted on American rootstock that were resistant to the pest. However, there was a one thing that prevented this aphid from taking over the entire continent: sandy and stony soils. This is where we find pre-phylloxera vineyards. As the “-pre” in the name suggests, these vines predate phylloxera and are therefore ancient and unique varieties that you won’t find in modern vineyards. These vines can produce high quality grapes with distinctive characteristics and flavours that are different from today’s more common grapes. Rare and highly valued in the wine industry, their existence is a testament to the skill and winemaking tradition of a particular region and winery. In the case of Marqués de Riscal, one of the great Rioja wineries in the world and the oldest in this region, they have understood better than anyone how to get the maximum potential from a small number of pre-phylloxera vines that it owns. Carefully cultivated vines produce wines with a unique complexity and flavour that reflect the history and tradition of the Rioja region.
This is how Marqués de Riscal Viñas Viejas Rosado was born, a rosé wine whose exceptional characteristics come from the fact that it is made with pre-phylloxera vines aged over 80 years old. These are old Tinta de Toro vines planted on terraces with gravelly soils in the highest areas of the river Duero. Once the grapes are ripe, harvested and sorted, the natural bleeding technique is used. This method of making rosé wine involves extracting some of the grape must after a brief maceration with the skins that usually lasts a few hours. During this time, pigments and aromas are extracted from the skins and mixed with the must. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Finally, as a special feature, the wine spends 4 months in contact with fine lees of the Sauvignon Blanc variety to provide freshness and complexity.
As a result, Marqués de Riscal presents Marqués de Riscal Viñas Viejas Rosado, an unusual rosé that shows us how this renowned winery reinvents itself year after year to stay ahead of the game and offer exquisite quality. A rosé with a modern profile and limited production that showcases the purest essence of pre-phylloxera vineyards.
