About Luis Felipe Gran Reserva Brandy

In the venerable town of Palma del Condado (located in Huelva, in the western part of Andalucía), the esteemed Bodegas Rubio have safeguarded a centuries-old secret: oak barrels containing a most extraordinary brandy. This batch, aged for years and nearly forgotten in a corner, was unearthed in 1893 and possessed distinctly unique characteristics, unlike anything else within the winery. Inscribed on its exterior was merely a name, serving as a clue: Luis Felipe. Who was this enigmatic figure? For whom were these barrels intended? None other than the illustrious Duke of Montpellier himself, son of Louis Philippe I (King of France) and a member of Andalusian high society, who made his residence in Sevilla for his entire life. Today, several centuries later, this brandy can still be savored, marketed under the brand Luis Felipe, and is known as Brandy Luis Felipe Gran Reserva.

Brandy Luis Felipe Gran Reserva is a slice of history maturing in the traditional solera and criadera systems. In this aging process, so characteristic of southern Andalucía, the barrels are stacked one atop another in formations colloquially known as cachones or andanas, where the brandy is periodically transferred from the higher barrels to those below. Thus, while the top barrels will contain the newest distillate, the bottom ones (positioned at ground level) will hold only the oldest spirits. From these, Brandy Luis Felipe Gran Reserva is drawn for bottling. The volume extracted will be replenished with liquid from the level above... and so the process continues in an endless centennial cycle.

Beyond the wood, the climate under which Brandy Luis Felipe Gran Reserva matures plays a significant role: nestled in the heart of the County of Huelva, between the marshlands and the Guadalquivir River, along the shores of the Costa de la Luz, and under the shelter of the Sierra de Huelva. Quite the setting indeed!
