In wine production, the altitude of vineyards can play a significant role, as it affects temperature, sun exposure and grape quality. So, high altitude vineyards are often associated with high quality wines due to the cooler conditions that can contribute to slower ripening and better acid balance in the grapes. Le Ragnaie, a winery in the region of Tuscany (Italy) and, more precisely, in the Montalcino denomination, is known for its high-altitude red wines. They own vineyards ranging from 180 to 621 metres above sea level, and the results have demonstrated the ability of its winemaker, Riccardo Campinoti, to produce mind-blowing wines with unique characteristics where altitude is the secret to achieving the best aromas of the native Sangiovese variety and a fresh and balanced acidity.

Le Ragnaie Rosso di Montalcino Single Vineyard is a Rosso di Montalcino from single vineyards at high altitude. These are Sangiovese vines grown following organic principles and harvested at optimum ripeness. In the winery, the selected grapes rest on the skins for up to 90 days to absorb the colour pigments, tannins and aromatic components of the fruit. Fermentation then takes place in cement tanks and finally the wine ages slowly in large Slavonian oak vats over 12 months.
