About Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken
Just as the vineyards of Bordeaux have been closely linked to history and its castles since ancient times, the prestige of the Riesling variety is an impressive representation of German wine culture. Someone who knows this very well is Wilhelm Weil, undoubtedly the face of viticulture in the VDP Rheingau for three decades and one of the most prominent figures when it comes to steering this German region on the banks of the Rhine River. Born in 1963 in Rheingau, he has been running his great-grandfather Robert Weil’s winery since 1987. A prestigious German company located in the municipality of Kiedrich that, thanks to the absolutely superior location of its vineyards, has reached the top with its deep Riesling.
An example of this great work is Kiedricher Riesling Trocken Ortswein, a Riesling white wine from vineyards classified as Erste Lage and Grosse Lage (the highest quality) planted on unusual soils, formed by phyllites and magna with over 60% slopes. This vineyard had already been mentioned at the end of the 12th century as the “mons Rhingravii” (the mountain of the Rhine counties). With strict, quality-focussed methods in the vineyard and a manual harvest and selection, made more complicated by the steep slope, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed in the winery, and the resulting must is vinified on lees at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks.
The result is exceptional. Versatile, fresh and very gastronomic, Kiedricher Riesling Trocken Ortswein is a white wine that showcases the German star variety at its best. A high-altitude Riesling from a German winery with “château character”.
