About Gramona Vi de Glass Gewürztraminer
Similar to many other types of wines that emerged from unforeseen circumstances, Eiswein, or ice wines in Germany, and vin de glace in France, also originated from a serendipitous mistake. It is said that these wines were created when, in cold climate regions, grapes left on the vines during winter naturally froze due to the low temperatures. This phenomenon occurred particularly when the grapes were almost ripe but not sufficiently so to be harvested before the first frosts. The vintners, realizing they could not pick them in time, allowed the grapes to freeze. The surprise came when, upon pressing them in their frozen state, it was discovered that the extracted juice was much more concentrated in sugar and acidity, resulting in a very sweet and complex wine. Thus, what began as an oversight led to the creation of a unique wine: Eiswein or vin de glace.
Gramona, a historic and prestigious winery from the Penedès region in Catalonia, renowned for its production of corpinnats and exceptional still wines, dares to introduce us to Vi de Glass Gewürztraminer, an ice wine crafted from the gewürztraminer variety, seeking the essence of the grape and taking inspiration from exquisite Eisweine. However, unlike these, the freezing of the grape does not occur in the vineyard (as Penedès does not experience temperatures low enough for this effect) but in the winery, in special chambers at -15°C, using liquid nitrogen to accelerate and homogenize the process. The resulting must, with an exceptional concentration of sugar, ferments over a longer period than usual: two and a half months, resulting in a wine that is fruity, concentrated, sweet, and refreshing at the same time. Afterwards, it is stored in a thick, dark glass bottle, specially designed to protect its aging process, with an unlimited aging potential, maturing and evolving over time.
Far from being a fortuitous outcome, Gramona Vi de Glass Gewürztraminer is born from the dedication and meticulous work of Gramona to capture the essence of gewürztraminer in its maximum concentration. Its balance between sweetness and freshness makes it a unique sensory experience, which grows and transforms over time.
