About Gorka Izagirre Ilun

When we think of txakoli, the traditional wine of the Basque Country comes to mind: an ancient wine made with local grapes, typically white, young, and low in alcohol. However, the region's vintners have managed to reinvent themselves and adapt to modern times without losing their essence. Today, we can find red, rosé, and aged txakolis. Gorka Izagirre, a pioneering winery in the evolution of Bizkaia wines and a key player in the regeneration of quality txakoli, has launched a striking red txakoli. Under the name Ilun, which means 'dark' in Basque, the winery highlights the freshness, uniqueness, and Atlantic character of a previously forgotten native variety: hondarrabi beltza.

Gorka Izagirre Ilun is a very limited production made entirely from the native variety hondarrabi beltza. A red wine from a 1.2-hectare vineyard that is cultivated with respect, limiting production to 4,000 kilograms per hectare. Vines over 15 years old located in the town of Larrabetzu in Bizkaia are harvested by hand at the optimal moment of ripeness. In the winery, vinification is carried out with great care, selecting, destemming, and crushing the best grapes and fermenting with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Finally, the wine rests for a few months in these same containers before being bottled.

As a result, Gorka Izagirre Ilun is a light, fresh, and balanced red wine, highly versatile and gastronomic. A unique experience that enhances this ancient grape variety and reveals another way to enjoy txakoli.

 

2022

Gorka Izagirre Ilun 2022 is a youthful and light red wine with a pale hue and shades of cherry red and violet edges. On the nose, it features prominent aromas of currants and raspberries, along with a spicy and herbaceous touch. Upon tasting, the entry is light and approachable, with a smooth and velvety palate. The flavours of red fruits and herbaceous notes are perfectly balanced, leaving a fresh and balsamic finish.
