About Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
A land steeped in history, power, and wine. It is likely that during the Gallo-Roman era, vineyards already blanketed much of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a quaint town in southeastern France (near Avignon), home to the summer residence of the Popes. It was specifically Pope John XXII, the second pontiff of the Avignon Papacy, who commanded the vintners of Cahors to plant new grapevines. These vines, which would come to be regarded as the inaugural papal vineyard, gave birth to wines of exceptional quality, acclaimed worldwide and featuring prominently at the table of the successors of Saint Peter. The vintners of this region, recognizing their potential, would band together and in 1936 establish the A.O.C. Châteauneuf-Du-Pape-Blanc, where to this day, illustrious wines such as Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc continue to be crafted.
Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is an exquisite white wine produced by the winery Clos des Papes, owned by the Avril family, a lineage entwined with this trade since the 18th century. To mention this surname is to evoke the living history of the region. This particular family, linked to the wine business since the 18th century, withstood the devastation wrought by phylloxera on their original plot in 1865 and also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the A.O.C. Châteauneuf-Du-Pape-Blanc.
Today, where they continue to be renowned for their quality, the family oversees 32 hectares of venerable vineyards (around 80 years old), cultivating both red (such as mourvèdre and syrah) and white grape varieties (roussanne, picardan, bourboulenc, clairette, grenache blanc, picpoul). The viticulture - spread across various plots in the finest areas - is entirely artisanal and organic. This unique blend of grapes is further enhanced by the variety of terroirs, featuring microclimates and soils dominated by galets, rounded stones that absorb heat.
The vinification of Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc begins with manual harvesting and a meticulous control and selection of grapes that undergo four successive filters: the first at the time of cutting, the second in the crates, the third en route to the winery, and the fourth at the sorting table. Once the must is obtained, the fermentation of Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc commences with a starter culture. Finally, Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc will undergo a minimum of three years of aging in seasoned barrels.
2020 | Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2020 is a sumptuously creamy white wine. The bouquet is commanding, redolent of pears, anise, grapefruit, blossoms, and raspberries. On the palate, it presents as dry and expansive, seamlessly integrated, with a hint of salinity. The finish is extensive and enduring. |
