About Château Potensac
On a high point in the north of the Médoc, close to the river, and nestled between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic, lies Château Potensac. This privileged location makes it the perfect place to plant vineyards. However, despite popular belief, there were not always vineyards in the Médoc (which comes from the Latin “in medio aquae”). The vine dates back to the 1st century when the Bituriges Vivisques, a tribe of Celtic warriors who settled in Burdigala (the future Bordeaux), decided to plant the Biturica, the ancestor grape of the Cabernet Sauvignon, which is much more resistant to the cold.
Since then, Médoc wines have gained worldwide fame. Behind this recognition are great houses, like Château Potensac. Today, this property belongs to Jean-Hubert Delon, vigneron and winemaker, who inherited it from his paternal grandmother. Château Potensac in particular has always been inherited by women. They produce Château Potensac, a red wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in French oak barrels.
This wine is born to the west of the village of Ordonnac, where 60 hectares of vineyards (with an average age of 38 years old) stretch over a mountainous area, with limestone subsoils covered with clay and gravel outcrops. Thanks to this blend, it is possible for each variety to express itself clearly and authentically with a great aging potential. The work in the vineyard is done by hand, carrying out each task according to the area’s ancient knowledge. Following a manual harvest, Château Potensac is taken to the winery, where it is destemmed and crushed. From there it goes into fermentation tanks, where the must will be converted into wine through the work of the yeasts. In this step, each plot will be kept separate, including 14 months of aging in French oak barrels.
Finally, Château Potensac is blended and bottled at the discretion of the house’s most experienced experts.
