About Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild is a red wine coupage made mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and with varying proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and sometimes with a very small touch of Petit Verdot. It is a wine classified as an AOC Pauillac 1er Cru wine.
Château Mouton Rothschild was the last to join the prestigious list of the 1er Cru de Pauillac wines. It was the winery that invented the work of art label, seeking a different artist for each vintage. Some of these artists included Salvador Dalí (1958), Joan Miró (1969), Pablo Picasso (1973), Andy Warhol (1975), Francis Bacon (1990) and Antoni Tàpies (1995). The wine was not incorporated in the 1855 Official Bordeaux Wine Classification as a Premier Cru possibly because at that time the vineyard had been acquired by an Englishman. It did however obtain the classification later on, in the revision that was made in 1973.
The vineyard for Château Mouton Rothschild covers 90 hectares in the northeast of Bordeaux, on the edge of the Médoc peninsula. The Romans had already cultivated vineyards in the Médoc. The area benefits from the virtues of the oceanic climate but is protected from its excesses. The plots have gentle slopes that favour water drainage, and the soils are composed of gravel, stones and pebbles, mixed with clays and sands, and are optimal for cultivating the vine, producing elegant, powerful and richly tannic wines with a long life.
Château Mouton Rothschild is harvested manually and is subject to a strict selection of bunches and berries so that only those which meet the optimal conditions to be part of the future wine are vinified. It ferments in wooden foudres and is aged in new French oak barrels for about 20 months. The wine also spends a few months in Château Mouton Rothschild’s enormous bottle cellar. In it the temperature is constantly between 12ºC and 15ºC, with a humidity of 80 to 90% and very little or no light - optimal conditions for the ageing and storage of the bottles.
Château Mouton Rothschild is considered by many to be one of the best reds in the world. Their wines are intense, tremendously elegant and complex, and with a huge ageing potential. An old world gem.
