About Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is a sweet Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc white wine from the AOC Sauternes Premier Cru Superieur produced by Château d'Yquem.

Château d'Yquem is considered the best winery in Sauternes and one of the best in the world. It produces liqueur white wines from bunches affected by the appreciated "noble rot". Its vineyard is the only one that is rated as Premier Cru Superieur de Sauternes.

The vineyard for Château d'Yquem is located between Sauternes and Farges, in mountainous terrain. It covers a total area of 113 hectares, of which normally only about 100 are vinified. Its soils are mainly gravel, although there are also more clayey plots. They are harvested in stages in order to harvest only those grapes raisined by the positive effect of Botrytis, i.e. those with "noble rot".

Once harvested, the grapes for Château d'Yquem are transported in less than an hour to the winery and there they are pressed 3 or 4 times to extract the maximum amount of sugars and must. Afterwards they ferment in barrels for a period of 2 to 6 weeks. The fermentation stops only when the alcohol and the level of sugars in the medium prevent the yeasts from working. It then ages in barrels for a period of 6 to 8 months. The best barrels are then selected and only these are used to age the wine 20 months more, and end up forming part of Château d'Yquem. Lastly, it is bottled the third winter after the harvest.

Château d'Yquem is a fantastic natural sweet wine that has honeyed, citrus and peach notes, accompanied by an unctuous mouth that perfectly balances the acidity and sweetness.

2020

Château d'Yquem 2020 unveils itself in a captivating pale yellow hue. As one brings it closer to the nose, a tapestry of aromas unfurls, comprising lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, and lime, interwoven with delicate hints of fresh blossoms and a distinctive scent of crushed stone. On the palate, this sweet wine astonishes with its zesty citrus freshness and crisp green apple nuances, progressing to a spectrum of flavors that encompass tropical fruits and a balanced sweetness reminiscent of honey, all framed by a slender mineral streak.

2019 Château d'Yquem 2019 is an exquisite sweet wine with a pleasant complexity on the nose where menthol aromas and very varietal notes of the Sauvignon Blanc grape appear. Artichoke, asparagus and a touch of iodine harmoniously and subtly accompany its honeyed and fruity aromas (apricot, quince, tangerine). The palate reveals energy and tension. A wine that is always sublime, with a masterful balance between acidity and sweetness that provides an unforgettable experience. It is easy to enjoy but difficult to describe.
2003 Château d'Yquem 2003 is a perfectly tuned wine with hints of manduka honey, quince, honeycomb and nougat. It does not have the pixelation of a super top vintage. However, on the palate it is unctuous from the outset, with hedonistic fruit, sweet honey with orange zest and strong spicy notes in the finish. These have a moderate length, but it ends with an abundant glycerin that fills the mouth.
2002 Château d'Yquem 2002 has aromas of dried honey, marzipan and melted candle wax. On the palate it opens up in a controlled manner, and has a fine acidity and a spicy core. The vintage results in a wine with a slight bitter edge that gives it distance and tension. It will keep perfectly in the bottle until 2035 or later.
1998 Château d'Yquem 1998 has a powerful nose, with hints of candied ginger, honeycomb, crema Catalana, canned lemons, tangerine skin and musk perfume. On the palate it is beautifully balanced, with a perfect freshness that lightens its 134.4 grams of sugar per litre. It culminates with layers of fantastically persistent exotic spices. An exceptional vintage that can last up to 50 years or more in the bottle.
