About Castell d'Encús Majjan

Scientific studies indicate that climate change is disrupting the natural grape ripening cycle. This complicates the cultivation of certain varieties in specific regions and could alter the profile of some of our finest wines. In light of this situation, high-altitude wines demonstrate greater resilience to the effects of climate change, presenting a unique opportunity to stand out and gain recognition. A prime example is Castell d'Encús, the project that Raül Bobet has established in the Catalan Pyrenees, at over 800 meters above sea level, with the aim of producing fresh, elegant, slender, complex wines of exceptional quality. Additionally, he now ventures into a sweet wine made from botrytized grapes.

Under the name Majjan, which means marrow (bone marrow) in Sanskrit (a classical language of India), Raül presents us with this delight with great aging potential. A sweet wine crafted from sauvignon blanc and semillón varieties of grapes affected by the Botrytis Cinerea fungus and some partially frozen. Once hand-harvested with vineyard selection, they are transported to the winery, re-selected, and carefully pressed. The obtained must ferments with native yeasts and then ages in oak barrels for 5 years in an oxidative manner.

Acknowledging that climate change is already a reality, Castell d'Encús Majjan presents itself as an opportunity to enjoy the vibrancy, freshness, and complexity of an estate reaching up to 1000 meters in altitude, with good sun exposure and surrounded by dense forest. A natural sweet wine that is truly a marvel.
