About Cascina Morassino Barbaresco Ovello
In France they are called plots and many wineries present their vineyards as a true mosaic of separate and carefully catalogued plots. However, this approach is not common in Italy, this selection by terroir has never taken place, except in Langhe between Barolo and Barbaresco (Piedmont). It is here that we find Ovello, the northernmost vineyard of the village of Barbaresco, whose vines are planted at the highest altitude on calcareous soils rich in clay. This is also home to the small Cascina Morassino family winery run by winemaker Roberto Bianco. So, having such a prized raw material, it is not surprising that they produce typical classic reds using Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes. Following in the footsteps of the founder, his father Mauro Bianco, and with a degree from the prestigious Alba Enological School, his philosophy focusses on grape quality and making the most of the land’s potential. It is in this Barbaresco grand cru that Cascina Morassino Barbaresco Ovello is born, a red wine from 20-year-old Nebbiolo vines cultivated through respectful agriculture and limiting the total yield to 2 kg per vine. At the time of harvest, an extensive selection process happens, looking for the portions of the vineyard that have produced the best grapes. Following maceration in the winery, fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for 7-8 days. Finally, it is aged in large 25 hl French oak barrels for 24 months. Considering that Cascina Morassino is a small family winery in one of the most prestigious regions of Italy, they present us with the history and dynasty of a great wine. Cascina Morassino Barbaresco Ovello is a structured, complex and spicy red wine from a grand cru.
