About Ca N'Estruc Negre

In 1999, amidst some controversy, the D.O. Catalunya was established. While some producers were in favor, others were less convinced. Despite the challenges, this appellation, which now encompasses 202 wineries and more than 300 Catalan municipalities, managed to forge ahead. Among them, Ca N’Estruc never wavered and became the first winery to register. Since then, its wines have undergone a significant leap in quality, with its bottles becoming some of the most exciting in the northwest of Spain. All of their creations stand out: reds, whites, rosés... but if we were to recommend one, our choice would be Ca N’Estruc Negre.

Ca N'Estruc Negre is a young, biodynamic red wine crafted in the most natural way possible. Few more words are needed to introduce it. Traditional methods that fully respect the environment are the cornerstone of this winery from the town of Esparreguera (at the foot of Montserrat). This particular estate, which currently spans 22 hectares, is one of the oldest, documented as far back as 1574, and has traditionally belonged to the family of Francisco Martí Badía. For centuries, the estate—which has also been dedicated to agricultural and livestock uses—has remained active, reaching the current generation where Francisco is preparing to hand over to the next generation, his daughter Anna. Together, they work side by side to extract the best from the vineyards of this estate. This is no easy task, as Ca N’Estruc is distinguished by a vast diversity of soils, with abundant alluvial, clayey, calcareous, and gravelly terrains. Each one is optimal for different grape varieties, hence at least 11 different grapes are cultivated separately at an altitude of 165 meters, catering to each of their specific needs. Moreover, Ca N’Estruc made an early commitment to organic and biodynamic cultivation. This transformation of the vineyard was undertaken in the 1980s and has since been the guiding principle of this winery that also sources grapes from other local viticulturists (always under their supervision).

During the entire vineyard cycle, work is done by hand. This continues through the harvest, which is arguably one of the most crucial moments in the entire winemaking process. Therefore, the grapes are meticulously cared for, ensuring they arrive at the winery in perfect condition. This is not overly complicated in the case of Ca N’Estruc Negre, as the plots surround both the farmhouse and the winery—much like the Bordeaux style—greatly facilitating the transport and preservation of the grape clusters. Each variety is harvested separately and at different times, eagerly awaiting the precise moment when the berries reach their optimal ripeness. After picking and selection, Ca N'Estruc Negre is destemmed and processed, moving to stainless steel tanks where it will ferment for about 15 days. Throughout this period, where temperature is carefully controlled, daily pump-overs are performed. This step is crucial as it ensures that the cap (the top layer of skins that protects the wine) stays in contact with the rest of the wine, allowing for the extraction of the maximum amount of compounds that give Ca N’Estruc Negre its color and aromas. Finally, once the yeasts have completed their work, Ca N'Estruc Negre is racked and prepared for malolactic fermentation (which will occur spontaneously).

We could continue to share more details and anecdotes about Ca N'Estruc Negre, but we believe that would be superfluous. All of this will pale in comparison once you taste a glass of this red wine. A tasting will be the definitive experience with Ca N'Estruc Negre. So, don't hesitate any longer and get yourself a bottle now.
